Lake Qarun

The Fayoum Region has a lot to offer tourists who are interested in a combination of history and natural beauty, in particular. Because of the abundance of birdlife and greenery that can be found there, Lake Qarun itself is a very popular destination for bird watchers and environmental enthusiasts.

Location:

From the business center of Cairo, which is easy to get to by road, to Fayoum City, which is also easy to get to by road, takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes by road. Both places are about the same distance from each other. It will only take you forty minutes to get to Fayoum City.

History:

Egypt’s Lake Qaroun (also called Birket Qaroun) is the only place in the country where you can see water and desert together. The only other place is the Suez Canal, where ships move between the sandbanks. Other than the tankers that go through the Suez Canal, Lake Qaroun (Birket Qaroun) is the strangest place in the country where you can find both water and desert. On all sides, the lake is surrounded by dry hills, and in the far distance, it is easy to see how big the Western Desert is.

A long way off on the lake, you can see a few fishing boats bobbing around. Locals call the body of water “The Pond” (El-Birka), which may have come from the horn-shaped peak on an island in the middle of the body of water. The Famous, on the other hand, think that the lake got its name from a character in the Koran who was punished for being “exultant in his fortune” by having the earth eat all of his money. A lake is a popular place for people to go swimming, and the water is warm enough to do so all year long. But because the weather isn’t so great from January to April, it’s not a good idea to do this activity during those months.
